#29: Namchow Mee-Jang Tom Yum Shrimp Bowl

$

Namchow: Tom Yum Shrimp Bowl Stars: *** 1/2
Notes: Just polished it off a minute ago. Not extremely complicated but a very satisfying bowl.
Upon opening the packaging, the consumer is greeted by two small but very clear pouches
of which one contains a mix of chili oil/seasoning oil, and the other a base with
dehydrated meat ad vegetables. After leaving it to steep with some boiling water, the
end product is a bowl full of bright red broth and some really greasy noodles. Wasn’t a
really hot bowl; on the contrary, it was very citrussy flavored. But very very greasy. I
can’t begin to describe how greasy it is! A worthy bowl of noodles on it’s own.

So this was a neat little presentation. Came with its own bowl and lid – looks to be reusable as well.

Three packets – one with a fishy smell and had veggies in it and maybe shrimp bits, a dry powder packets and a red chili goop packet.

So my review (click image to enlarge): other than the packaging, this isn’t great at all. The noodles are weak – mushy and of little character. The flavor is nice and citrussy, but missing something and way too salty. I like the packaging, but it doesn’t make up for the product. 2 out of 5 stars. Get it here.

#106: GreeNoodle Tom Yum Flavor

So today here’s review #98 – the weird GreeNoodle… These noodles contain some kind of weird ingredient called moroheiya. “Moroheiya is a super vegetable that is more nutritious than spinach, carrots, or borccoli in most aspects” is written on the back and cite as a quote by the ‘Japanese Ministry.’ although which Ministry that would be is unclear to me.

Yup – they’re green alright!

Seasoning powder and another packet who content is not evident unless you read the outer packaging (unless you can read Japanese of course).

Powder and chili paste: say hi to hot pain!

Okay so health aspects aside, I did not like it (click image to enlarge). They had a strange flavor. I can’t describe it. The actual noodles tasted artificially flavored – maybe the moroheiya? I dunno. These guys are very much of the new information age and have their website prominently shown on the  back – www.greenoodle.com. This one really did not appeal to me at all. I’ll admit, a very interesting idea trying to bring a healthy item into the instant noodle world, but I think the execution could be better – perhaps if they emulated Indomie’s style of Mie Goreng! That’d really cover up the flavor and be a competitive idea… But for now, I give it 0.5 out of 5.0 stars. Not to my liking. Get it here.

#126: Mama Instant Rice Vermicelli Tom Yam Koong Flavour

So this is an interesting one. The package weighs practically nothing and the noodle blocks is extremely thin. Weirdness….

The noodles and very very thin like angel hair pasta, but it’s rice noodle.

A packet…

Of packets. A paste and a powder.

Looks like a sambal of some sort – thick and very red like fire! The powder is ample.

Click image to enlarge. The paste was hot – and lemony – at least I think thats where the citrus flavor has come from. Not a lot here – small package. Strange stuff – don’t really enjoy it. I’m going to have to say that thwe rice vermicelli is okay though, but its just a little… Boring even with the spiciness. I’m giving it a 1.5 out of 5.0 stars. Don’t like this one.

Some noodles from Thailand today. I’ve reviewed some noodles that are by Mama and Tom Yum but not the creamy.

Chili powder, dry seasoning sachet and seasing paste/oil.

I just can’t get over how nasty some of the seasoning pastes look in the bowl.

So here’s the finished product (click image to enlarge). Noodles were good but it was quite spicy, not creamy and really didn’t taste at all like shrimp that I could detect. Get it here.

I’m also going to say this is the greasiest looking stuff yet. The cream and the red stuff was repulsing each other like crazy – it looked really neat but was kind of well gross. I’m tossing this a 2.0 out of 5.0 stars.

#172: Mama Oriental Style Instant Flat Noodles (Tom Yam)

So I asked Kit to pick out two packs of noodles for me to try next. Here’s the first one. I’m curious whether it’ll be any good; the Mama brand has reviews on here from 1 to 4 stars so we’ll just have to see. By the way, on the back in two places it says tom yum instead of tom yam like it does on the front. I’m going to go with tom yum being correct and the yam being a typo.

Chili powder, soup base and flavored oil.

The oil was interesting on this one to be sure – very light in color.

Click image to enlarge. I’m going to say I really really enjoy the noodles – they’re wide rice noodles. They’re different; I’ve had wide egg noodles but never ones that were this long! The soup is almost cryptic; I used half the chili powder and its still got a nice heat. The oil adds a bit of interesting oomph to it and the base dissolved almost completely. I have a sore throat and this is pretty nice so far. Not a lot of vegetable action here… Anyways, this is rather unique and enjoyable. I’m giving it 3.75 out of 5.0 stars.

So some new stuff. I like Tom Yum flavor noodle soup usually so hpoing this should be nice. I really liked the last Koka bowl noodle I had recently – it had a packet of coconut powder in it – weird!

So the garnish has veggies and shrimp and then there’s powder and an oil.

Sitting atop the rice noodles waiting for a 3 minute bath in boiling waters.

So not too shabby (click image to enlarge). I really like these rice noodles. The shrimp were actually very nice and the veggies were ample. The broth was citrus and spicy – as Tom Yum I’ve had before usually tastes like. I liked it. 3.25 out of 5.0 stars.

#362: Vina Acecook Daily Instant Noodles Mi Canh Chua Hot & Sour With Shrimp

So here’s another of Vina Acecook’s line of ‘Daily’ instant noodles, hot & sour with shrimp. Sounds good to me; the picture on the front is definitely enticing…

Four packets – that’s always nice. Here we have [clockwise from top left] soup paste, powdered soup base, seasoned oil and veggies as well as dehydrated shrimp.

Clockwise from top: veggies ‘n shrimp, seasoned oil, soup powder, liquid soup paste.

Click image to enlarge. So I added a couple of fried eggs, some fried shallot, a little kizami shoga (ginger you’d find in yakisoba) and a little pepper on the eggs. This is one of the better bowls of noodles I’ve had in quite some time. I become quite fond of how Vina Acecook blends its veggies – there’s always some nice sweet basil in there and it really comes through in the flavor of the broth. The noodles were pre-seasoned and so the sesame oil-esque flavor is easily detected in this soup. The noodles themselves are light and plentiful – not chewy but not spongy. The vegetables really boost on re-hydration which is nice. There was a little hot and a little sour; kind of like Tom Yum soup but much lighter. The eggs and other flavors on top made it absolutely perfect. 4.5 out of 5.0 stars for this one! Find it here.

I like how colorful the Vina Acecook commercials are.

So far I’ve been so pleased with the Vina Acecook products. Everything’s been so nice about them. So let’s try a new one – a bowl noodle this time.

Everything individually wrapped – kind of nice! A noodle block on the left then top left clockwise we have paste soup, powdered soup base, veggies and a little naruto peeking and seasoned oil . Four seasoning packets – niceness! Oh – I failed to take a pic but there’s also an included fork which will be in the update of the included forks which I’ll do in a bit.

Clockwise from top left: seasoned oil, veggies, soup paste and powdered soup base.

Click image to enlarge. Threw in a couple fried eggs, a little garlic salt, a little Tony Chachere’s Creole Seasoning and a couple drops of Crystal Louisiana Hot Sauce. The noodles stay firm and absorb a good amount of the flavor. The veggies came up nicely and were abundant. The broth is very tasty – a lot of citrus, shrimp flavor and warmth. The other things I threw in added to it and made it all very nice. I loved it – 4.25 out of 5.0 stars – excellent meal!

#439: Little Cook Tom Yum Seafood Premium Noodle

So the idea of a seafood noodle soup with fake seafood has been kind of daunting for the past couple months. However, today was the day. I must fear no ramen! So, here we have some seafood tom yum from Thailand.

Nice earthy colors from left to right: dry seasoning powder, seasoned oil paste and finally chili powder.

Then we’ve got a retort pouch!

It’s full of fake seafood – looks like it’s made from tapioca and other things. There appear to be mushrooms in there too according to the ingredients.

Wow now that’s a crazy looking pile of packet contents. Should be interesting…

Click image to enlarge. Added a couple fried eggs. So here we are. The noodles are of a wider gauge – broad and flat and actually quite good. The broth is flavorful – spicy and lemonny. As for the fake seafood, it’s not bad. However the mushrooms are kind of funky – I had one larger piece that was almost the consistency of a carrot. So this was pretty good stuff I’ll admit and I’m kind of pleased I have two of them. Giving this one a 3.0 out of 5.0 stars. Get it here.

Here we have some Yum Yum noodles sent to me from Holland. made in Thailand and they’re Tom Yum flavor. Sounds good to me – here we go.

Just like all the other Yum Yum flavorrs except this one has drk flavored oil – hmm…

Looks like oil and perhaps a paste going on.

The finished product (click image to enlarge). A couple of fried eggs and a few drips of the new Tabasco Buffalo style hot sauce. Noodles aren’t great but not bad – kind of baseline good. The first thing I taste is lemon, characteristic tom yum. Spicy too. The broth has a nice color and flavor that permeates the noodles very well. Good bowl of noodles – 3.5 out of 5.0 stars.

Yum Yum Jumbo Tom Yum Talay commercial.

This is a strange commercial; it’s just a burger. Looks very boring. But I wonder what ‘dressings’ they offer? There’s one of these next to Seafood City in Tukwila… Hmmm.

Whoa what’s this?

Okay I cam read that. I figured I should pick out an orange one of some kind for Halloween…

Seasoned oil and powder…

Plus the high-tech folding fork!

Not an Autobot or a Decepticon, but this transformer feeds your face!

This stuff reeks of lemon. Reeks.

Click image to enlarge. Noodles aren’t all that great but everything tastes nice – shrimp, high heat and citrus. Yup – Tom Yummy! Only rel downside is the cup itself; if you drink the broth out of it it tends to dribble down your chin. I’m adept at using a cup too so I don’t think its my fault, really. 3.0 out of 5.0 stars.

After tasting those last two earlier, I was ready to have something that looked really good – and here it is! Tom Yam noodles, made in Thailand and from Japan!

Here’s the back of the packaging (click image to enlarge). I boiled an egg in with the noodles last time, but today I thought a couple fried eggs would go nicely.

Some noodles – look pretty standard. They had a little flavor.

Powder on the left and seasoned oil on the right.

As above, seasoning on the left and seasoned oil on the right. A lot of powder here!

Click image to enlarge. Alrighty it’s done woo hoo! I made two eggs with a little Cavender’s All-Purpose Greek seasoning. I also added some Kizami Shoga (pickled ginger) and finally, some fried shallots – this time some fresh ones (thanks Greg B.!).  The noodles were perfect – reminiscent of the kind you’d find in Momofuku Ando‘s flagship Chikin ramen from 1958, just an exponentially milder taste. The broth is spicy and full of citrus. It’s perfect pork tom yam flavor – loved it. 4.75 out of 5.0 stars – wonderful! UPC barcode 4903101701356 .

Cool – a Sunlee bowl. I’ve had a couple of these before – they were crab flavored and really quire good. Tom Yum soup is one of my favorites and hopefully since this is from Thailand, it should be pretty good.

Click image to enlarge. The ingredients list winds around the rim of the bowl. I like how it mentions that you put 360cc of water in – that’s a pretty precise measurement and usually they just say ‘to the line’ instead of an exact number.

Seasoned oil and seasoning powder. This is another one whose packets are just the the Yum Yum ones.

Here’s the block with seasonings on top – awaiting the 360cc os boiling H2O.

Finished (click image to enlarge). Added a single fried egg with a dash of Tony Chachere’s Creole seasoning on top. The noodles weren’t bad – a little bit on the slightly non-pliable side. The broth was great – very sippagle and had a good spiciness and citrus taste, as well as a hint of shrimp. Tasty little bowl – 3.5 out of 5.0 stars. UPC barcode 761934016320 . Get it here.

This is a pretty generic looking bowl of instant noodles. However, they’re from Thailand and boast a hot and spicy Tom Yum flavor – Hopefully they’re really good!

Here’s some information from the side panels (click image to enlarge).

Pasty liquid seasoning on left, powdered on the right.

Here’s everything awaiting the boiling water three minute bath.

Finished (click image to enlarge). Noodles were of a decent nature – a little chewy and not at all spongy. The broth lives up to its name – very strong spicy and sour flavors with a lot of citrus flavors. There’s a good chicken taste as well. It is lacking in veggies though – there aren’t any, unfortunately. Pretty good stuff – 3.25 out of 5.0 stars. UPC barcode 684431000763 .

Here’s another of KOKA’s varieties – this time in a bowl and with rice noodles. Notice in the directions that it specifies how much water to add – that’s pretty awesome.

Here’s the side panel information (click image to enlarge).

A seasoning powder and liquid packet.

The garnish packet – this time, the contents are steeped with the noodles.

Here’s everything in the bowl awaiting two cups of boiling water.

Finished (click image to enlarge). Added a scrambled egg with some Tabasco Jalapeno hot sauce on top. The rice noodles are the kind I like – wide, thin and very light. The broth is interesting – very lemony and spicy but has a bit more shrimp or seafood taste that I like. The garnish had little shrimps in it that were good too. ASll in all, a decent Tom Yum bowl – 3.5 out of 5.0 stars. UPC barcode 639192721648 – get it here!

Here’s the first review I’m doing with my new camera! No more Blackberry 8900 camera – now I’ll be using a Sony Cybershot 14.1MP! Should look better now, hopefully! Today I decided to dig out this bowl – it’s one my wife got for me for my birthday at Uwajimaya. Let’s give it a looksie!

Side panel information (click image to enlarge).

Here’s the noodle block in the bowl. I’m going to use a new bowl today but I’ll use this one to cook them!

Dry seasonings packet.

…and the contents!

Liquid seasoning paste.

Had a very citrus odor – fitting for a Tom Yum.

Finished (click image to enlarge). Notice the new bowl? My mother in law got that for me at the 99 Ranch Market in Pleasanton, California this last week! Thank you! Added one fried egg and sprinkled a little Jane’s Krazy Mixed Up Salt on top and added a smattering of Bird’s Eye Stir Fry vegetables. The noodles are pretty standard noodle bowl noodles and  nothing remarkable. The broth was disappointing; spicy but not flavorful enough. When I slurped the broth at the end I tasted a lot of heat and very little flavor. 2.5 out of 5.0 stars. UPC barcode 684431000732 – get the shrimp tom yum variety here.

Here’s the lid and it’s info (click image to enlarge).

Side panel (click image to enlarge).

The noodle block did not want to come out of the cup! The cup by the way is plastic and the lid is made of foil.

Powder seasoning packet.

…and its contents.

Seasoned oil.

If you’re wondering, what I do is put a little hot water in the little cup and swish it around so I can get the seasoned oil out after the photograph.

Finished (click image to enlarge). Added a little Huy Fong Sriracha on top. I’m pleasantly surprised! The noodles aren’t bad – better than expected. Tom Yum is usually a spicy, citrussy flavor. They got it right! This is a decent cup! 3.75 out of 5.0 stars! UPC bar code 9555022301235 .

Exactly one year ago as I type this, we were taking a break from Disneyland and doing a couple other things. Well, one thing we did was go to a little market and I got this instant noodle bowl.

Here’s a bit of info – these are hard to get info off of and as for scanning, impossible.

Yay! A new fork for the Included Forks page!

The noodle block – in plastic wrap.

Okay we have from left to right powder seasoning, some kind of oil and finally chili powder.

Here is the flavoring packets atop the noodle block.

Finished (click image to enlarge). This is much better than I expected! The noodles aren’t the best in the world, but they steeped well and are nice and fluffy. The broth is the highlight here – citrus, spicy heat and a good flavor. Not bad! 3.5 out of 5.0 stars. UPC bar code 610232022574 .

Hey it’s a bag of Good! Right there between bad and excellent… Kind of a funny name – let’s check it out.

Here’s the sticker that was on the back.

Here’s the back of the package (click to enlarge)

The bean vermicelli.

Powder seasoning.

Interesting smell.

Here are the veggies!

A couple little pieces of kamaboko in there.

Seasoned oil.

Nice color.

Soup paste.

Dark and thick.

Finished (click image to enlarge). Added yellow onion, two fried eggs with Krazy Mixed Up Salt and Huy Fong Sriracha chili sauce and some green onions. The bean thread is good. I gotta say that for me, using a pair of scissors to shorten the length really makes a big difference in palatability in bean thread. The broth is nice – has a very strong citrus flavor and a nice heat that accompany a nice seafood taste. I liked this one – probably the best bean vermicelli I’ve tried yet! 3.5 out of 5.0 stars.
